Employee Recognition Gifts
Recent research commissioned by Perkbox has found that 45% of working Brits are habitually working outside of their contracted hours. As team managers and employers it’s a good idea to take a moment to reflect on your work family. Do you think you are recognising their efforts enough?
We all know that a motivated team equals an engaged team which in turn leads to a highly successful team. As a gifting business we’re interested in the impact that we could have on developing these attitudes. We’ve been looking into the impact that recognition and reward has on motivation and engagement in the workplace.
Did you know that 41% of organisations reward workers through recognition schemes? Now these aren’t just through additional ‘perks’ within your contract like pension contributions, healthcare or bonus schemes. We mean that while employee perks are important, this generation respond well to the more ceremonial approach to additional recognition.
With a workforce sharing everything on social media, we found that small gifts can be more visible and therefore motivating for staff than expensive perks that can be overlooked. These visible tokens send a clear message to staff of their value (plus they can put it on instagram and have their peers congratulate them, reinforcing their self-worth).
Regular rewards and work fairies
Technology services provider ITLab put their people at the centre of their offering, therefore breeding a culture of happiness and wellbeing in their team. They have ‘work fairies’ who leave gifts on desks throughout the year ranging from personalised messages to chocolates, to cups of teas and balloons. This recognition and reward programme keeps employees motivated and shows their team that ITLab recognise and appreciate the contributions that they are making to the company.
While the regular gifting approach works well and is highly shareable on social media it’s also important to look at employee of the month or future leader schemes (and not just for sales teams). Being awarded something in front of your peers is something that regularly motivates employees, you could even place a plaque on the wall to mark employee tenures.
So we’ve convinced you, what are the best token workplace gifts though?
Studies found that visible tokens for employee recognition gifts are the most successful. These don’t need to be expensive but products with a broad appeal and impact are most popular. We recommend putting the extra effort in to understand what motivates your team so as to gift appropriately. Thoughtfulness is a growing trend and people appreciate it. For instance if you know your team member has a hayfever allergy avoid buying them flowers. If they are a health addict perhaps a crate of beer isn’t a great option. Were they to suffer with a gluten allergy a tray of donuts isn’t the best option.
